Evidence-Based Therapy Approaches
At Jacob's Well, we integrate proven therapeutic methods with biblical wisdom, recognizing that all truth comes from God and can be used for healing and restoration.
Integration of Faith and Practice
At Jacob's Well, we believe that all truth is God's truth. While we utilize evidence-based therapeutic approaches, we recognize that lasting healing and transformation come through the power of Christ working in and through these methods. Our goal is not just behavioral change, but heart transformation that brings glory to God and genuine freedom to our clients.
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."
- Psalm 147:3
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Renewing the Mind Through Truth
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is founded on the principle that our thoughts directly influence our emotions and behaviors. This evidence-based approach aligns beautifully with biblical teaching, as Scripture emphasizes the importance of our thought life. King Solomon wrote, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7), and Paul instructs us to "be transformed by the renewal of your mind" (Romans 12:2).
In our Christian approach to CBT, we help clients identify distorted thought patterns and replace them with truth-based thinking rooted in God's Word. The process of "metanoia" (repentance) literally means "change your mind," which reflects the core principle of CBT. We guide clients through scripture-based cognitive restructuring, using God's promises and truths to challenge negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, and other emotional struggles.
This therapeutic approach recognizes that while changing our thinking patterns is important, true transformation comes through the power of the Holy Spirit working through renewed minds. We integrate prayer, scripture memorization, and biblical meditation as tools for cognitive restructuring, helping clients develop thought patterns that align with their identity as beloved children of God.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)
Processing Trauma with God's Healing
EMDR is a specialized therapy approach designed to help individuals process traumatic memories and experiences. While this method has generated thoughtful discussion within Christian counseling circles, we recognize that God has given us minds capable of healing and that He can use various means to bring restoration to those who have experienced trauma.
From a biblical perspective, we understand that trauma deeply affects the whole person - mind, body, and spirit. The Bible acknowledges the reality of suffering and its impact on human experience. Jesus Himself was "a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief" (Isaiah 53:3), and He promises to "bind up the brokenhearted" (Isaiah 61:1). When we use EMDR, we do so with the understanding that God is the ultimate source of healing and restoration.
Our approach to EMDR is conducted within a framework of prayer and dependence on God's healing power. We recognize that while the technique may help process traumatic memories, it is Christ who provides true healing and freedom from the bondage of past wounds. We encourage clients to invite God into their healing process, trusting that He can use this method as one tool among many to bring about restoration and wholeness.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Attachment & Connection by Design
Emotionally Focused Therapy is grounded in attachment theory and recognizes that human beings are created for connection and relationship. This approach aligns perfectly with biblical truth, as God Himself declared, "It is not good that man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18). We are designed for relationship - first with God, and then with one another.
EFT helps couples and families understand their emotional patterns and attachment needs, recognizing that when we go against God's design for connection, conflict and dysfunction arise. The therapy process mirrors the biblical concept of covenant relationship, where partners learn to be emotionally available, responsive, and engaged with one another. This reflects how God relates to us - He is always present, responsive to our needs, and actively engaged in our lives.
In our Christian approach to EFT, we integrate biblical principles of forgiveness, grace, and sacrificial love. We help couples understand that their relationship can be a reflection of Christ's love for the church (Ephesians 5:25-33). The security found in healthy attachment relationships points to the ultimate security we find in our relationship with God, who promises never to leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
Narrative Therapy
Rewriting Your Story in God's Grand Narrative
Narrative therapy recognizes that we are all storytellers, constantly constructing meaning from our experiences. This approach resonates deeply with Christian faith, as the Bible itself is predominantly composed of stories - narratives that reveal God's character and His relationship with humanity. The most common literary style in Scripture is historical narrative, providing us with real-life portraits of human existence and God's redemptive work.
In narrative therapy, we help clients examine their life stories and identify limiting beliefs or narratives that may be holding them back. From a Christian perspective, we understand that our individual stories are part of God's greater story of redemption and restoration. When clients feel trapped by their past or defined by their problems, we help them discover how God can write a new chapter in their lives, transforming their pain into purpose and their struggles into testimonies of His grace.
This therapeutic approach acknowledges that clients are the experts of their own lives while recognizing God as the ultimate author of their stories. We encourage clients to become co-authors with God in writing their future, understanding that He can take even the most broken narratives and weave them into something beautiful. Through this process, clients often discover that their struggles have prepared them to comfort others and bring glory to God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
Family Systems Therapy
Understanding Relationships & Generational Patterns
Family Systems therapy, particularly Bowen Family Systems Theory, views the family as an interconnected emotional unit where each member's actions and reactions affect the entire system. This perspective aligns with biblical teaching about the interconnectedness of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:26) and the reality that family patterns and behaviors are often passed down through generations.
Scripture acknowledges the impact of generational patterns, speaking of how the sins of the fathers can affect children "to the third and fourth generation" (Exodus 34:7), while also proclaiming God's desire to break these cycles and bring healing. Family Systems therapy helps individuals understand how their family of origin has shaped their worldview, emotional responses, and relational patterns. This awareness creates opportunities for growth and change that honor God's design for healthy family relationships.
We are all involved in multiple systems including work, church, school, friendships, and family. Our involvement in these systems help us to learn, grow, change, and improve. With this in mind, the symptoms that we experience within any given system also help us to learn, change, grow, and improve. One of the important elements guiding a family systems approach is the concept of identifying the function of the symptom(s). The symptom(s) that we experience, depression, anxiety, aggression, substance abuse, etc., serve a purpose. If the function or purpose of the symptom can be identified, and then addressed directly, the symptom will no longer be necessary and then diminishes, and in many cases, is no longer experienced because it no longer serves a purpose.
In our Christian approach to Family Systems work, we help clients develop healthy "differentiation" - the ability to think and act based on their own values and convictions rather than being controlled by family emotional systems. This concept aligns with Jesus' teaching about the importance of following Him even when it creates tension within family relationships (Matthew 10:34-37). We guide clients in establishing boundaries that honor both their relationship with God and their family connections, working toward reconciliation and healing where possible while maintaining personal integrity and spiritual growth.
